Your backpack. It's your trusty companion on adventures big and small, from weekend hikes to daily commutes. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one? This guide will equip you with the knowledge you need to find the perfect pack for you adventures.
Finding Your Perfect Fit
First things first, fit is almost the only thing that matters. An ill-fitting backpack will turn the promise of an enjoyable trip into aches, pains, and discomfort. Here's how to find your perfect match:
- Torso length: This is the distance between your hip bones and your shoulder blades. Most backpacks come in different torso lengths, so you'll want to find one that aligns with yours. A pack that's too long or too short will throw off your balance, incorrect distribute weight, and cause discomfort.
- Hip belt: The hip belt should take most of the weight off your shoulders. Make sure it fits snugly but comfortably around your hips, and that the weight transfers evenly.
- Try weighted: Buying a pack online without trying it out first at an outfitting store, may result in many returns. In fact, give the locals your business. Normally, brick and mortar stores have small sand bags or other weighted items to simulate a full load in your pack. Load it up, try it on, adjust it properly, take if for a walk around the block, then make a decision.
Consider Your Adventures
Now, let's talk about your adventures. What kind of trekker are you?
- The Day Tripper: If weekend day-hikes are your jam, a pack in the 20-30 liter range should suffice. Look for features like comfortable shoulder straps, good ventilation, and a hydration sleeve.
- The Weekend Warrior: For overnight or weekend adventures, you'll need a pack in the 40-50 liter range. Consider features like a built-in rain cover (or a highly water resistant materials), internal frame for support, and multiple compartments for organization.
- The Backpacker: For extended journeys (5-10 days-ish), aim for a pack in the 50-60 liter range. Opt for a sturdy frame, adjustable suspension, quality construction, comfortable shoulder and hip straps, and features to maintain good weight distribution and quick access to critical gear.
- The Thru-Hiker: For those spending months on very long trails, we enter very light or ultra-light territory with gear. This will help reduce long term stress on the body. Aim for a pack in the 40-60 liter range and around 2 pounds or less. Simple, sturdy design and construction is important and comfort is critical.
Don't Skimp on Quality
Your backpack is an investment. It’s the essential container that holds everything you need to survive on your journeys. A well-made pack will last for years, so it's worth spending a bit extra on quality materials and construction. Look for features like water-resistant fabric, YKK zippers (known for their durability), and reinforced stitching.
Embrace the Journey
Finding the right backpack is an adventure in itself. Take your time, try on different packs, and ask questions. With the perfect pack, you'll be ready for any trail and every adventure that comes your way.
